Poor Kenny Rogers. For as long as I can remember he has been a golden voiced, silver haired gent you’d be happy to have over for tea at your grandmother’s house. It’s said that Kenny has had cosmetic surgery throughout his career but now it looks like some recent procedures have been ill-advised and have left him looking like many other tight-faced stars. He’s also had his once respectable wardrobe of nice jumpers tossed aside in favor of shirts and leather.

Then Now
Oh Kenny, genius though you are, why have you forsaken us? He even has a Myspace. Let me say that again. Kenny Rogers. Has. A. Fucking. Myspace.
All that said, his new album, prior to the promoting of which Kenny probably had this work done, is actually quite good.
To the “surgeon” responsible for this work; You bastard, you killed Kenny.
Firefly is what Joss Whedon did next, after Angel and Buffy that is. But you probably already know that. I’ve started watching it recently and would now consider myself a fan. I saw Serenity when it hit the cinemas and really enjoyed it. I’ll have to watch it again when I’ve watched all of the Firefly episodes, I’m sure I’ll get a lot more out of it.
The show is set 500 years in the future and in the episode I watched this evening I noticed something peculiar. In a shot, where some characters have to “reprogram” a something-or-other, there’s a screen and what’s on the screen? Looks like the “Add new hardware” wizard from Windows 2000 to me. I really, really hope there are no instances of Windows 2000 running in ~2500 AD.

Switched to Ubuntu for my workstaion a few months back when I got fed up of things breaking in Debian, mostly my fault. I’d still use it on servers over almost everything else. I’ve been very happy so far and last week I upgraded-in-place from Breezy to Dapper and I’m still very happy, everything is working and some things are working better. The most pleasing find of today is that the new version of Rhythmbox supports SID playback! Oh joy of joys! Maybe it’s worked for a long time, it’s just not something I would have thought to check. I’ve had the whole HVSC sitting on my disk unplayed for a long time - not for long!
Some how, “Einstien a Go Go” by Landscape popped into my head this morning and got stuck. So, a quick Google and look on YouTube and here’s the video from 1981. It embodies all that is good great about music videos from the 1980s.
I’m not familair with their song “European Man” but the video looks like some kind of crazy 80s fun too. The song is social commentry about the predicted imminent mechanisation of the workforce and the resulting leisure time for people and the “european man” represented as a zarathustrian, aryian worker. Machines didn’t end up replacing us, they enslaved us and we work more, not fewer, hours.
The way to exercise a brain hiccup is to feed it what it wants.
Saw this on Henry St. yesterday, made me smile.

I also posted it on the “Found Objects” LJ community.
About a year ago Tanya tricked me into going to the Silicon Pub Quiz, I thought it was going to just be a regular quiz, didn’t know it was associated with gamers and their gaming convention. The quiz was hosted and compered by DoC & Matt, was great fun and we won!
So, we reformed out team and went back there this evening to defend our title and we won, by quite a margin, again! We are reigning champions and since it was the last quiz DoC & Matt (big thanks due for a good night) will be doing, I’m unlikely to go again.
Our prize was 4 sterling silver crowns (tin-foil and cardboard) and a chest laden with rubies (a bucket of jelly).
Have you ever seen a bucket of jelly? Have you ever been up to your elbow in a bucket of jelly? I have.
